The Effects of 60CO Whole Body Irradiation on Alkaline Phosphatase Activity & Metabolism of Ginseng Administered Rat Pulp and Bone Marrow

Abstract
Histological studies on living beings irradiated in vivo by x-ray, have frequently been carried out.
But conclusive mechanisms of tissue injury and biochemical reactions of cells caused by x-ray irradiation are subject of further investigation yet.
Collette et al. also found that x-ray irradiation has some influences on calcium metabolism, alkaline phosphatase and dentine formation of rat pulp tissue.
Gong and Cohn reported that the decrease of bone growth and metabolic rate might primarily be occurred due to reduced alkaine phosphatase on account of destruction of osteoblast on white mice.
Though chemical compositions and effects of Ginseng to living beings were not investigated in details, it was reported that Ginseng protected the living beings from x-ray irradiations and metabolic disturbances of vitamins and nucleic acid in liver and submaxillary gland due to intoxication of C C16.
The author has performed a comparative study on the variation of content of alkaline phosphatase and minerals such as Ca, Na, Mg. K. out of anterior teeth pulp, bone marrow of femur and serum after irradiating 60Co ¥ã-ray (1,000R) once following administrating to rat.
RESULTS:
1. Weights of rat femurs had shown the decreasing tendency a bit, with passage of ¥ã- ray of 60Co.
2. Optimal pH of alkaline phosphatase in dental pulp was 10.2 and in bone marrow, 44.
3. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity had reduced markedly in 60Co ¥ã-ray irradiated group in compared. with the controls. In Ginseng-administrated and 60Co ¥ã-ray-irradiated group (the fourth group) it had shown the unsteady alterations as time goes by.
4. Alkaline phosphatase activity of 60CO ¥ã-ray-irradiated group lowered in both bone marrow and tooth pulp in compared with the controls. Its decreasing rate of the former was somewhat less marked than that of the latter.
5. Concerned with content of minerals,. amount of Ca had decreased markedly- in 60CO irradiated group, however in Ginseng-administrated and 60Co ¥ã-ray-irradiated group had decreased slightly Mg content also revealed similar result as in the case of Ca.
